Prisoner sets fire to Diamond Police Station

A REMAND prisoner, who is being held at Diamond Police Station, East Bank Demerara, started a fire yesterday afternoon which scorched a CCTV camera and two doors at the facility, Commander of ‘A’ Division Clifton Hicken has confirmed.The incident, which occurred at approximately 13:18hrs was initiated by protest from the man who demanded that he be allowed to use the washroom. According to Hicken, he began making unbearable noise and his request was subsequently granted.

However, he noted that not long after, ranks noticed smoke emerging from a section of the building and rushed to the scene. Upon realizing it was a fire, the Guyana Fire Service was contacted and the situation was subsequently contained.

The Commander disclosed that ranks discovered that a cloth was placed over a CCTV camera and this is believed to been where the fire had originated.

The prisoner, whose identity could not be disclosed, is still in custody at the same police station while investigations continue.
