PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar has acknowledged the tremendous missionary and humanitarian work of the Salvation Army in Guyana, and extended heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the Guyana Division of the Salvation Army as it celebrates its 120th Anniversary since being established here. The Guyana Division was established on April 24, 1895, through the initiative and evangelic endeavours of Barbadian-born cobbler, Samuel Marshall who was living and practising his trade in Demerara, British Guiana. Also instrumental were Brother Coborn; Adjutant and Mrs. Edward Widgery and Lt. George Walters.
On this occasion, His Excellency Donald Ramotar, President of the Republic of Guyana, has issued a message of congratulations to the Divisional Commanders, Officers and soldiers of the division.
The message which now appears in The Salvation Army’s 120th Anniversary souvenir booklet reads:
“I extend heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to The Salvation Army on this auspicious occasion, the 120th anniversary of its establishment in Guyana. I want to acknowledge the tremendous missionary and humanitarian work of the Salvation Army in our country over this period and to thank this organization for its continued work in Guyana as it attends to the spiritual and material needs of our people.
“The Salvation Army is the only army that does not engage in war. It pursues peace. And it does this through its witness to its faith. Faith without charity, we are told, is but a mere sentiment. The Salvation Army has merged faith with charity. The Salvation Army has helped countless of our citizens to make their lives better. You have brought relief, healing an succor. You have been faithful to the command to love your brothers and sisters.
“As President of Guyana, I am proud of The Salvation Army and proud of its work in Guyana. I thank you, on behalf of the people of Guyana.
“On this, your anniversary, I wish you continued progress and all the best in your future endeavours.
“May this most significant anniversary be a memorable one.”
