President Granger strengthens ties with Catholic community – invited to visit the Pope

ARCHBISHOP Nicola Girasoli, Apostolic Nuncio Ambassador and Bishop Francis Dean Alleyne met with President David Granger yesterday to offer their congratulations and support for the new Government. During the visit at the Ministry of the Presidency, President Granger expressed gratitude to Archbishop Girasoli for the sincere congratulations and his assurance of the church’s support for the Government.
Speaking briefly to the Guyana Chronicle, Archbishop Girasoli stated that he came to congratulate the new President of Guyana and also discussed other matters.
“I took the opportunity to personally congratulate President Granger and to affirm our continued support for the government.”
The Archbishop explained that over the years the Vatican and the Republic of Guyana have enjoyed good relationships and it is the hope of the Church that this continues. “This was an occasion to reaffirm our good relations that exist between the Vatican and the Republic of Guyana.”
He noted that the two parties also discussed at length the assistance provided by the Church in the education sector. “The church is very impressed with the country and we have a good relationship with the Government, especially in education.”
He noted that the President appreciates the contributions of the church and the work of Bishop Alleyne in the country.
“I also took opportunity to invite President Granger and Foreign Affairs Minister Greenidge to visit the Pope as I see this as very important.”
