THE Guyana Police Force (GPF) yesterday carried out an operation on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD) at Craig, seeking to arrest several persons allegedly involved in the murders of businessman Ganesh Ramlall at La Jalousie, and Travis Rudder at Nandy Park, EBD, as well as the armed robbery of Land Court Judge Nicola Pierre in her Felicity, East Coast Demerara home.
A release from the (GPF) said the 02:00hrs operation was carried out yesterday, based on a tip-off by a “concerned citizen”. A team from the Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) unit was deployed to the area, along with detectives for the arrests.
Police ranks came under fire at the scene, during which confrontation, according to the GPF release, a constable was shot to his right thigh. Two suspects were shot after the ranks returned fire, wounding one fatally.
A 9mm Glock pistol with two magazines and 25 matching rounds were recovered by the police, along with two wrist-watches believed to have been stolen. Also, a number of 9mm spent shells were recovered at the scene.
The fatally wounded suspect has been identified as 29-year-old Rolston Morrison, called “Mappy” or “Sadam,” whose known addresses are Nabaclis, ECD; Agricola, Georgetown; and Providence, EBD.
A wanted bulletin had been issued on March 18, 2015 for his arrest as he was a suspect in the March 14, 2015 shooting death of Dwayne Kennedy at the Golden Grove Market.
Meanwhile, the other wounded suspect, 22-year-old Warren McKenzie of Brutus Street, Agricola, has been hospitalised at the GPH, under guard, after being shot in the abdomen.
The other seven male suspects who were in the building, have been arrested, and are in police custody. The injured constable, whose identity was not given, was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, and is reportedly in a stable condition.
Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud, along with Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Clifton Hicken, and Head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Senior Superintendent Wendell Blanhum, visited the injured rank, and offered him words of consolation.
