POLICE are looking for two suspects who have since disappeared from their La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD) address after the robbery of 36-year-old businessman Dhaniram Tirbeni, called ‘Ram’.Tirbeni was robbed at his home at Lot 13 Studley Park, Canal Number One, WBD on Monday. The bandits gained access to the home by prising open a window in the lower flat of the building.
Two of the three bandits then proceeded to the upper flat of the building, where four persons were asleep – the businessman and his wife in one room, and their two children in another. The children hid themselves inside the room throughout the ordeal.

The businessman was then awakened by gun butts to the head, while the bandits demanded cash and jewellery. He was placed to kneel with his hands behind his head, and then shot once to the right arm. He also received cuts to the head from the beating.

According to his wife, Shivanie Tirbeni, the incident has left her family traumatized, especially her daughter who was scheduled to write end of term exams Monday.

She said her husband has been a poultry farmer for several years and this is the first occasion that he was attacked.

Recollecting the events, she said that the family was asleep when the gunmen barged into their bedroom and gun butted her husband several times in the head.

They woke up terrified and screaming, she said, as the bandits demanded money and kept asking for more after being given what they had in their possession.

Shivanie said that while one of the bandits ransacked the room another pointed a gun to her husband’s head and eventually shot him. “I thought my husband was dead, I then began to scream louder and they decided to leave,” she recalled.

She then immediately contacted her brother-in-law, who in turn called the police. He subsequently arrived in a taxi and took the injured man to the hospital. The woman noted that the police arrived a short while after and launched an investigation.

Police discovered a crowbar and keys to Tirbeni’s vehicles in the neighbour’s yard, in addition to several footprints in the mud outside where they made their escape. The Tirbeni family operates a grocery shop and poultry business.
