UP to late yesterday afternoon ranks from the Police ‘A’ and ‘D’ Division were trying to locate a Bel Air, Georgetown man who is accused of discharging a loaded firearm in Canal No. 2, West Bank Demerara even as investigators are still trying to ascertain if the man is a licensed firearm holder.The shooting stemmed from an accident which occurred very early yesterday morning when a car and truck reportedly collided along the main road in Canal No. 2, in the vicinity of Resource.This newspaper was told that the man, whose name was given as Anand Singh, was ‘riding shotgun’ (front passenger seat) of motorcar, PRR 3042, when it ended up in the path of an oncoming truck, GLL 5159, forcing the truck driver to take evasive measure to prevent a head-on collision.
However, the efforts were not entirely safe as the two vehicles did connect, causing extensive damage to both vehicles.
When the vehicles came to a stop, following the collision, Singh exited the vehicle. An argument ensued between himself and the truck driver, following which Singh reportedly discharged a weapon. Reports suggested that a bullet ricochet and struck a man travelling on the truck who was identified as a porter.
When police arrived on the scene, they took the driver of the car in custody to assist them in their investigation even as the shooter, who was identified as living at lot 94 Bel Air, Georgetown entered another vehicle and fled the scene.
Police investigators visited the man’s home, based on information provided to them by the driver of the car, but the man was nowhere to be found.
When the Chronicle visited the area, the badly damaged car was parked along the Canal No. 2 main access road while the truck was parked a short distance away. The airbag of the car was also evidently activated. (Leroy Smith)
