THE police in ‘D’ Division continue to empower youths by engaging them in meaningful activities such as sports and life- skills training programmes.

Senior Superintendent Stephen Mansell and a team of ranks recently handed over a quantity of sports gear to Pastor George Stewart, who is also president of the Vergenoegen Sports Club which has male and female teams in football and cricket.

This donation derived from a visit by the commander and his team two months ago when the club’s needs were assessed and a request was made for sports gear.

During that visit the youths, most of whom are school dropouts and are unemployed, were urged to get registered for cookery and other lifeskills courses initiated by the ‘D’ Division police as part of their social crime prevention programme in that corridor.

The Vergenoegen Sports Club was adopted by the ‘D’ Division police and other meetings and activities are in the pipeline to engage youths in meaningful activities.

The handing-over ceremony took place at the Vergenoegen Community Centre Ground, East Bank Essequibo.
