PNC, is that you?

THE revelations emerging from the Rodney Commission of Inquiry are shocking elements in the current generation who accepts Granger’s leadership and the PNC in blind faith, thinking that when people, especially PPP members make comment about the horrible 28 years of PNC in the administrative office, and the events (execution of the infamous X-13 Plan) preluding that party’s ascent to office, it is merely to score political points.

However, the exposes by witnesses who have been granted immunity from prosecution for complicity in crimes of those days have been an eye-opener for many of the current generation, and a reminder of a dark interlude in Guyana’s history that wrought such devastation in the land, in every sphere.

The Rodney Commission of Inquiry has been long in coming; but “…for everything there is a season; and a time for every purpose under Heaven.” Maybe God has His purpose why this is the time for the RCOI; but if an ordinary mortal would hazard a guess, one would be tempted to think that our Heavenly Father is interceding in the affairs of this nation; because the PNC/APNU/AFC are all set to replicate the fiasco of the PNC/UF coalition, which heralded decades of destruction from which this nation is still on the painful road to recovery. One would hope that those being fooled by the sanctimonious utterances of the pretenders, who are daubing their own mess on others who have worked unremittingly, untiringly, committedly to turn around the fortunes of Guyanese and reverse the general malaise that had fallen all across the land under PNC dictatorial, oppressive and suppressive regime, are taking note of the facts and seeing the real faces of the opposition leadership and would make wise decisions when next they return to the polls.

So intermittently reminding Guyanese voters of the 28 years under PNC rule, when despots subjugated the ordinary people into subservience and practical beggary is imperative, because “…those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Do Guyanese want another episode under PNC dominion – a repeat of the nearly three decades of destruction, waste, profligacy, oppression, suppression, abject poverty, loss of freedoms of every kind? I think not. The Rodney Commission of Inquiry seemed to have been delayed by divine intervention; because the people are once more being fooled by the same ‘bunch of rascals’ (Dr. Cheddi Jagan’s description) who fooled them once before, only to obliterate their road to progress and prosperity; and to disassemble the mechanisms of peace within our unique tapestry of nationhood. Perhaps the RCOI will serve a greater purpose than to determine the facts behind Walter Rodney’s death. The disclosures of the terror of those times may deter those who believe that the PNC leopard has no spot from investing their future in that reprehensible combination’s political portfolio. If this purpose is served then Walter Rodney may well rest content that his life did not go in vain; but that, decades after his earthly existence he could still serve the people of this land and provide some purpose to his untimely demise.

In the end, Walter’s is the final victory, because those who implicitly believe in the false identity being projected by the PNC are, as a direct consequence of the RCOI, coming to terms with the fact that they do not really know their party and their leaders.
