Social Protection Minister Volda Lawrence has announced that some rehabilitation work will be done at the Palms, Brickdam, Georgetown, following complaints by inmates there. The minister made an impromptu visit to the institution last Monday.
According to a release, Lawrence said residents of the State-run institution have complained about conditions of the wards, especially on Monday mornings.
The minister said the residents are unhappy with the performance of staff working the night shift “who do not complete their responsibilities”.
As a result, they create difficulties for their colleagues who take over from them, especially on Monday mornings.
“Having visited the Palms I have to have follow up meeting(s) with the administrator,” of the institution, the minister said.
Her unexpected stop at the geriatric institution will also result in an urgent facelift for the aging wooden structure and emergency works to fix the plumbing system.
“This is priority. What has to be done is not huge but technical. If there is no funding remaining in the 2015 budgetary estimates I will be seeking emergency funding,” to get this done before the end of this year, Lawrence promised.
