PUBLIC Health Minister Dr George Norton on Saturday called on nurses to remain committed, respectful and compassionate. In delivering the feature address at the Guyana Nurses Association (GNA) annual awards ceremony, the Public Health Minister said while every health care worker is important, nurses share a special bond with their patients.
“No medical staff spends more time with individual patients than a nurse does. Nurses are patient advocates, managers of care, decision-makers, communicators, caregivers, teachers, counsellors, and so much more,” he told the small gathering in the auditorium of the GNA headquarters, Alexander Street, Georgetown.
As such, Minister Norton said it is important to recognise the efforts of nurses – individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty to care for their patients.
It was pointed out that in addition to their technical skills, nurses also bring with them a generous dose of compassion in dealing with patients, who are oftentimes not only in need of constant care but also emotional support and encouragement.
“Whether it is in the hospital setting, at health centres or even in ambulatory settings, nurses safeguard the health of countless persons and for this I applaud you,” the Health Minister said.
“Nurses, through your dedication and commitment, you have touched the lives of many patients and their family members,” he added.
Before taking his seat, the Public Health Minister pledged his continued support for development of the nursing profession, and to further collaborate with the GNA for the betterment of nurses in Guyana.
Meanwhile, topping the list of awardees was Kim Angus-Dennis, who was presented with the Gloria Noel Award. Angus-Dennis of Kwakwani, Region 10, was presented the prestigious award for selflessly providing quality nursing care.
GNA President Veronica Douglas was presented with the Gillian Butts-Garnett Award, while Demine Joseph was awarded for providing quality nursing care, and Candace James for her outstanding performance as a nursing tutor.
Hully Semple, Nicole Nicholson, Minita Edwards, Shiann Bagot and Jevon Chichester were all recognized for maintaining high standards of nursing care. The association also presented Kamela Kellman and Odessa Noble with tokens of appreciation for their continuous support.
Additionally, eight children, who are parented by nurses and who have achieved over 75 per cent during this year’s National Grade Six Assessment, were presented with bursaries.
