DENNIS Andries was in the twilight of a stellar career when he lost to Terry Dunstan on February 13, 1996. Aged 42 at the time and a solid 15 years Dunstan’s senior, Andries went down by a point decision after the 12th and final round. The fight was held in London, England.It was the penultimate bout of Andries’ professional career which commenced in May 1978 with a second round knockout of Ray Pearce. The Guyanese and Dunstan were battling for the latter’s Commonwealth cruiserweight title. Andries had his last fight in December of 1996.
Nicknamed ‘The Hackney Rock’, Andries won the Commonwealth light heavyweight and cruiserweight titles, and the World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight crown. His career lasted a total of 18 years during which time he secured 49 victories, 14 defeats and two draws.
The orthodox boxer was born in Guyana but started his professional career in England, his adopted homeland.
