GUYANESE-born middleweight Adrian Dodson (Carew) got his name entered into the Mike Tyson Hall of Fame when he lost by disqualification to Canadian Alain Bonnamie on October 5, 1999.
In a bruising encounter which saw both boxers touching the canvas, Dodson was disqualified in the 12th and final round for biting his opponent. The fight was held at the Royal National Hotel in London, England and at stake was the vacant Commonwealth middleweight title. The southpaw Dodson floored the Canadian in the seventh round. However, Bonnamie returned the favour in the 12th round. This resulted in the Guyanese putting aside the gloves to employ the `teeth technique’.
Dodson was 29 years old at the time, five years Bonnamie’s junior. The defeat dropped his record to 23 victories and four defeats. He once trained at the West End Gym in Tiger Bay before taking up residence in England.
The southpaw was undefeated in 18 fights when he met World Boxing Organisation super welterweight champion Ronald `Winky’ Wright. The bout was held in December 1997 and the Guyanese retired at the end of the fifth round.
Dodson won the lowly regarded International Boxing Organisation (IBO) on March 3, 2001 following a third-round knockout of Paul Jones. He lost the title in his first defence.
