ON OCTOBER 22, 1976 a gangly junior middleweight from Guyana made his professional debut in Queens, New York.
At the ripe age of 24 Kenny Bristol, a former New York Golden Gloves champion had his first taste of pro boxing when he defeated John LoCicero at the Sunny Side Garden, winning the four-round affair by points and had eight more victories before clashing with St Kitts and Nevis-born Pat Thomas for the vacant Commonwealth title in July 1979.
Following a 15-round decision over Thomas, the slick Guyanese became the first and only to win a Commonwealth title at home.
Bristol went on to achieve a record of 20 fights with 15 victories from an eight-year career and remains one of the best junior middleweights produced by this country.
