CLIFF Anderson gained a victory over F. Abrigo on July 1, 1940. The fight was the sixth for Anderson who had one more contest in his native Guyana before heading to the United Kingdom. The featherweight boxer was born Clifford Matthew Anderson on October 22, 1921 in New Amsterdam, Berbice and made his professional debut in 1940 as an 18-year-old. Anderson made two unsuccessful bids for the Commonwealth featherweight title in 1947. Both times he fought Al Phillips.
On March 18, he lost by points to the Englishman. In the rematch four months later, Anderson was disqualified by referee Andrew Smith in round eight, for illegal blows. He quit the sport in 1953 after engaging in a total of 87 fights.
Anderson boxed 602 rounds in his 13-year career, had 48 victories (19KOs), 28 defeats and 11 draws. The National Sports Hall was renamed Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in recognition of Anderson’s contribution to the sport.
He died in 1998.
