Nicknamed `Hurricane’, super featherweight Hugo Lewis went full blast on Wayne Coates on November 24, 2001. Coates could put up no defence when Lewis released an onslaught which forced the referee to call a halt to the fight in round one.
Six fights later the undefeated Lewis would win the World Boxing Council (WBC) Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) super featherweight title with a first round knockout of John Trotman in Barbados. He would have two more fights before, without explanation, walking away from the ring in 2004 at age 31.
At that time, the crowd-pleasing boxer had chalked up 18 fights without a single defeat and to this day remains the only Guyanese fighter to leave the ring with such a record.
Lewis was given the pseudonym after the powerful Cape Verde-type Hurricane Hugo that caused widespread damage and loss of life in the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Southeast United States in September 1989.
