NOTABLE DATES

IT WAS not unusual for featherweight Clifford Matthew Anderson to have two fights in one month. He had done that countless times in a career that spanned 13 years. In May 1946 Anderson fought Theo Medina and Sammy Reynolds respectively.
The battle with Reynolds occurred on May 28 at the Assembly Room in Kent, England and Anderson won the 10-rounder on points. Anderson had joined the pro ranks in 1940 and twice fought for Commonwealth titles.
In his last nine fights the famed Guyanese lost six times and the master of the game bowed out in 1953.
The master of the ring mustered only two victories from April 1952 to May of the following year when he had his last contest. Anderson was born in New Amsterdam, Berbice. He had his first seven bouts in Guyana before moving to England.
The legend died in December 1998 and the National Sports Hall was renamed in his honour. He secured 49 victories, 28 defeats and 11 drawn battles in a stellar career.
