CARIFESTA Avenue will not be renamed ‘Avenue of the Caribbean’, Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson has declared. In an interview with Guyana Chronicle, Minister Patterson said that Government has no intention of renaming CARIFESTA Avenue. News of the renaming had attracted widespread criticism.
The Public Infrastructure Ministry had, in March, made public its intention to enhance the main carriageway at a cost of $138M under a project called ‘Urban renewal on CARIFESTA Avenue: Avenue of the Caribbean’. This project, which continues ahead of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government Summit, has been divided into two lots: Lighting system, and civil works.
The Public Infrastructure Ministry (MPI) said in a statement yesterday that CARIFESTA Avenue would be closed to vehicular traffic from today to Friday to facilitate asphalt work; and the Railway Embankment Road between the Eugene F. Correia Airport Access Road and the UG Access Road would also be closed for the same period.
“Road users are therefore asked to use alternative bypasses for this period. Please take care to pay attention to all caution and directional signs in the area,” the MPI has admonished.
