MR. JEAN Ricot Dormeus, Director of the Office of the Organisation of American States (OAS) in Guyana, and Mr. Uribe paid Dr. Steve Surujbally, Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), a courtesy call at the GECOM Headquarters on Monday, July 9, and key issues associated with the management of elections were discussed.
Dr. Surujbally used the opportunity to update Mr. Dormeus specifically on issues associated with GECOM’s state of preparedness for Local Government Elections, among other pertinent issues currently engaging the attention of the Guyana Elections Commission, including ongoing efforts aimed at acquiring International Standards Organisation (ISO) certification pertaining to the conduct of elections.
The GECOM Chair and Mr. Dormeus also held preliminary discussions relevant to areas in which the OAS could provide GECOM with support in terms of capacity building/ institutional strengthening and technology transfer.
At the end of the meeting, Mr. Dormeus assured Dr. Surujbally of his commitment to support GECOM in every possible way pertaining to the conduct and validity of elections in Guyana.
