THE Executive members of the newly formed National Mine Workers’ Union of Guyana, headed by President Sherwyn Downer, met with Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection, Keith Scott; Chief Labour Officer Mr Charles Ogle, and other Labour officials at the Ministry’s 82 Brickdam, Georgetown Office. The union said its delegation was warmly welcomed by the Labour officials, and it was thankful that the Ministry recognises the importance and benefit of trade Unionism to the labour force in Guyana.

“Even as The National Mine Workers’ Union of Guyana seeks to bring salvation and a voice to the voiceless mining workers in all categories of mining in Guyana, we recognize the role the union has to play to make employers and employees have a level playing field for both the employer and the employee, as mining is being redefined,” the union said in a statement.

The union said that as it seeks to champion the cause of the mining workers and labouring masses, it looks forward to further cooperation from Government and to establish a working relationship with stakeholders.

“We look forward to working together in the best interest of (everyone) and (to) afford the mining workers and laboring masses the highest level of effective representation,” the union has said.
