New Market and Camp Street junction to remain closed for next 14 days

–GSIP works continue as programme nears completion

THE Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) on Wednesday said that under the Government of Guyana (GOG) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) US$10M Georgetown Sanitation Improvement Programme (GSIP), civil works at the junction of New Market and Camp Streets will continue for the next 14 days.  This junction will therefore remain closed to traffic.
The company says in a press release that the two-week closure is to facilitate the completion of the ‘main gate valve chambers’ which form a pivotal component of the rehabilitated sewerage system.

Programme Manager, GSIP, Orin Browne stated that “these chambers were constructed utilizing concrete and as such we must allow the concrete to harden or cure before placing any weight on the chambers.”

The manager emphasized that it was absolutely necessary to allow the newly-constructed concrete chambers to harden to avoid any damage to the refurbished sewerage system, GWI said.

Browne further stated that the GSIP is progressing on target as all the 24 sewerage pump stations are fully operational.  In addition, the completion of the main gate valve chambers marks the final stages of the decommissioning of the old sewer mains.

Meanwhile, GWI Chief Executive Shaik Baksh stated that the company regrets any inconvenience to commuters but emphasized the importance of completing all civil works to satisfactory standards.

“As we await full completion of the works at New Market and Camp Streets, repairs to all roadways in the vicinity of the main project areas will continue,” Baksh said.

He further said that while GWI will repair all roads excavated for the purpose of the GSIP, portions of the roadways which were in disrepair prior to the commencement of the GSIP civil works are not within the scope of the programme.

GWI will continue to consistently monitor all works, including road repairs, being conducted by the contractors (S. Jagmohan/Nabi Consortium).

Customers with concerns are asked to contact GWI’s Sanitation Hotline numbers on 227-8718 and 226-6059 from Monday to Friday between 8:00 to 17:00hours.

The company anticipates a successful completion of the GSIP and wishes to assure customers that every effort is being taken to minimize any inconvenience, the release concluded.
