NCN reiterates condemnation of attack on Kaieteur News columnist

– but expresses concern at KN’s misleading headline  when reporting on the issue
THE  National Communications Network Inc. (NCN) said it  views with grave concern, the headline in Tuesday’s edition of the Kaieteur News captioned ‘Fecal matter thrown in Freddie Kissoon’s face – NCN claims to know attacker’.
“We believe such a headline is distorting and does not reflect the essence of what was reported in our Late Edition on Monday, May 24, 2010,” NCN said in a statement issued by its management yesterday.

“Our story pointed solely to the incident which we have since condemned. The news item also conveyed an eyewitness account of what allegedly transpired, pointing to a remark made by Mr. Kissoon’s attacker,” NCN stated.
NCN said it carried this account only after having it corroborated. “To draw an inference and therefore publish that NCN claimed in some way, by way of our report, to know the identity of the individual who carried out the attack, is simply to misrepresent what we reported,” NCN said.
“Such reports and especially headlines, like the attack itself, flies in the face of the very pillars on which ethical journalism stand.”

“NCN, in no way, associates itself with elements rogue enough to carry out such an act. At the same time, we urge our media colleagues to ply our trade in a most responsible manner and to divorce ourselves from attempts to lure us into practices that berate our profession,” NCN stated.
“Again, we condemn this violation of a fellow media practitioner in no uncertain terms,” NCN’s management reiterated.
Kissoon was attacked around 19:15 hrs on Monday, outside the Jiffy Lubes store on North Road and Light Street, when a man approached his car and threw fecal matters into his face.
Kissoon later stated that the “container of miasmic mess” that was thrown on his face and onto his stomach “appeared to be faeces mixed with fresh cow dung”.
