THE National Milling Company (NAMILCO) yesterday renewed its sponsorship with the Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) for the 12th Annual Wheat-Up CARICOM day cycle race. During a brief ceremony yesterday at the Company’s Eccles Boardroom, several trophies were handed over to the Executive of the RBC.
Speaking during the ceremony, president of the RBC Brian Allen indicated that the milling company has been behind the RBC from the inception and continues to support the efforts of the club to develop cycling.
“They have been with us through thick and thin. I want to say at this point a special thank you to the management and staff of NAMILCO and for being there whenever we need them.
“This sport has grown from strength to strength over the years. It started with the road race from Georgetown to Long Creek and three years ago we decided to make it a circuit race. Why we did that is to get more people involved, get the sporting public involved and get more people behind the sport of cycling.”
He spoke of the plan to have next year’s event being truly a CARICOM event by inviting countries to take part, but noted that the help of central government will be integral in this regard.
Meanwhile Financial Controller of NAMILCO Fitzroy McLeod said that the event has been giving the sporting community an exciting environment to watch competitive cycling.
“The new format, which has been adopted over the last three years after we turned it into a 12-race criterium, allows for cyclists of all developmental stages, veterans, seasoned professionals to be able to insert in their calendar, an event which presents them with a very safe and challenging opportunity to test themselves and it has the unique feature of also presenting the audience with an ambience which is interactive, right next to the action,” he stated.
The feature event of the 12-race day is a 30-lap affair where the top rider will take home the Wheat-up trophy, a cash prize and a year’s supply of Wheat-Up.
