THE Ministry of Tourism and the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) have made good on their promise to help beautify the country by donating to the Environmental Community Health Organisation (ECHO) a number of tools to aid in the clean-up and beautification of Guyana. Speaking briefly at the handing-over ceremony held at St Margaret’s Primary School on Camp Street, GTA Director Indranauth Haralsingh explained that the sector had embarked on numerous clean-up projects prior to this initiative. He stated that for the tourism industry to flourish, a clean and beautiful environment is of paramount importance.
The director explained that the country has always been under severe criticism concerning the state of the environment, especially the city. He noted too that since President David Granger’s call for the clean-up of the city, many private and public entities have thrown their support behind the initiative.
Reiterating his point, he noted that for tourism in Guyana to flourish, a clean environment is necessary, and urged Guyanese to take pride in their environment and “let us clean up our country.”
The sector donated a number of rakes, forks, shovels, long boots, trash bags, gloves, cutlasses and a wheel borrow to the ECHO club.
Director of ECHO, Clive Muridalall, explained that there are 60 ECHO clubs country wide and the St. Margaret’s Primary School is one of the most vibrant. He noted that the club consists of 30 members.
The director explained the reason behind the organisation targeting schools: he noted that the change of attitude towards the environment needs to start at an early age. “We need to educate persons from a young age and look at the future that these students will be able to impart their knowledge to their elders as well as their younger peers.”
Georgina Lewis, also a Director of ECHO, thanked GTA and the Tourism Ministry for their contribution and assured Haralsingh that the tools will be put to good use.
