BEN Mekdeci, Nyron Joseph and Akeila Wiltshire excelled when the Digicel/Toucan Industries-sponsored Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Junior Skill Level tournament continued over the weekend at the Georgetown Club courts.Play on Saturday showcased a mixture of exciting matches and expansive victories. The more skilled players of Group `A’ demonstrated the gulf between themselves and their opponents in a series of one-sided matches, with Ben Mekdeci, Nyron Joseph and Akeila Wiltshire winning convincingly.
Group B’s Shomari Wiltshire and Alex Cheeks won 3-1 and 3-1 respectively, although the 3-1 final score betrayed the competitive nature of the match between Cheeks and Anthony Islam, who, but for the second set, fought gamely.
Rebecca Low displayed her poise in a 3-0 win over Sarah Lewis while Makeda Harding overcame second- and third-set losses to Maya Collins to hold on to a 3-2 victory to round off the matches in Group C.
Ethan Jonas dominated Group D, losing only a single set in three victories over Demetrius DeAbreu (3-1), John Phang (3-0) and Zachary Persaud (3-0) respectively.
There were two wins each for Samuel Ince-Carvahal, including a hard-earned 3-2 win over Michael Alphonso, Dominic Collins and Lucas Jonas. Both Collins and Lucas Jonas were tested in 3-2 victories over John Phang, who consistently proved to be an obstinate opponent.
There were more straightforward victories in Groups F, G and H where James Mekdeci, Nathan Rahaman, Liam Carpenter, Beau Fernandes, Chad DeAbreu, Mohryan Baksh, Louis DaSilva and Isabella Ramjohn romped to victories.
