AS Mashramani draws nearer, designers and their workers are busily putting together colourful and resplendent costumes in time for the costume and float parade on February 23, in keeping with this year’s theme “Cultural Folklore celebrating 44”.

The Government Information Agency (GINA) on Wednesday visited the Ministry of Education and Digicel Mash camps where designers and workers were busy putting on finishing touches on their creations.
Minister of Education Priya Manickchand along with Technical Adviser and Head of School Board Melcita Bovell visited and inspected the costumes being created at the Education Ministry’s Mash camp, at the Ministry’s Sports Complex on Carifesta Avenue.

Designer Nelsion Nurse, who gave an overview of the concept behind the costumes, stated that the ministry will be fielding a 50-member contingent in the full costume small band.
Nurse explained that the costumes will depict one of Guyana’s myths about the old Dutch ghost Cloot De Nieunkirk who lurked about at night, and people would hear the “clip- clop” of the hooves of his white horse as Cloot made his way home from his plantation. The costumes are white, and highlighted by glitter.

Meanwhile, Digicel’s assistant designer, Julius Payne said that the phone company will be going out 500 strong, in Egyptian style costumes come Mash Day, also in the individual male and female and the queen float.  He said that they are at the finishing stage of

creating the costumes and are now in the process of registering revellers.

The costume were designed by Olympia Small-Sonoram, and as usual, Digicel will be “putting on a show” for the patrons.
