Man charged over use of threatening language

A PART-TIME taxi driver of Lot 82 West Front Road Housing Scheme, Georgetown, was placed on $20,000 surety when he appeared in court Tuesday on threatening language and offensive weapon charges. Leon Totaram, 31, pleaded not guilty to both charges. The particulars of one charge said that on Saturday, April 12 at Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, he had in his possession one knife without lawful authority or reasonable cause.

The other charge stated that on Monday, March 31 at First Street, Alexander Village, Georgetown, he made use of threatening language to Shawn Yassin, where a breach of the peace may be occasioned.
Police Corporal Dinero Jones, prosecuting, said both the virtual complainant and the defendant are known to each and reside in the same neighbourhood.
The prosecutor did not relate to the court how the issue developed between the two men nor did he oppose bail.
The defendant in his effort to explain his reason for having the knife said that he usually assists his father in the mornings to clean fish at a wharf.
He was bonded to be on good behaviour pending the determination of the trial. The unrepresented man was ordered to post $10,000 surety on each charge and will have to make his next court appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on May 16.
