PEDESTRIAN Deonarine Singh, 49, of 164 Lusignan Public Road, ECD, a father of three, was on Wednesday night killed in front of his home by a driver who was reportedly speeding while overtaking another vehicle.

Speaking with this publication yesterday morning, brother of the deceased Danesh Singh said that he works as a taxi driver on the Lusignan Public Road and was incidentally passing his home when the accident occurred.

He said that he was not aware then that the pedestrian who had been struck down by the driver travelling in front of him was his brother, but he gave chase behind the vehicle since it did not stop.

Singh said he trailed the driver until he stopped a village away. He said that he cautioned the man, and took him back to the scene, and even advised him to render assistance to the injured man, but he declined.
Asked whether his brother was under the influence of alcohol when he was struck down, Denesh initially responded in the negative, but quickly said that it might have been the first time he was sober, and that it was rather unfortunate that he died while he was in the right.
Meanwhile, persons soon realized that the man who was struck down was in fact the brother of the Good Samaritan who had chased after the hit-and-run driver.
However, Singh soon succumbed to his injures, and many persons felt that this may have been avoided if the driver had taken the man to the hospital.
The police were informed of the accident and the man who was identified as Travis Taxi Service driver was taken into police custody.
Initial reports indicated that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident Tuesday night.
When this newspaper visited the Vigilance Police Station, the silver-grey Toyota Allion car, PLL 7933, was parked in the compound with some amount of damage to the right front side. The right side mirror was missing, the bumper and part of the fender were damaged, while the windscreen was cracked. The driver is said to be a resident of Enmore, East Coast Demerara.
Meanwhile, in a most unfortunate turn of events, Deonarine Singh is the second of his siblings to die as a result of a road accident. Yesterday, October 23, marks nine years since he lost another brother who was killed on the same spot, just hours away from his brother’s nine-year death anniversary.
And like the accident on Tuesday night, the errant driver, a pandit, was also a resident of Enmore, East Coast Demerara.
