London set for Women’s World Boxing Championships in South Korea

THE Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) has selected middleweight fighter Theresa London for the Women’s World Boxing championships to be held in Jeju, South Korea, from November 13 to 25.

The 19-year-old is the lone active female boxer with international experience having recently returned from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. London would be accompanied by GABA Technical and Tournament Director Terrence Poole.
President of the association Steve Ninvalle yesterday stated that Poole was an automatic choice since at present he is the only AIBA-certified Three Star coach in Guyana and that the World Championship requires Three Star coaches to officiate at ringside.
“We are indeed happy that Miss London would again have exposure to competition of the highest level. This augurs well to her personal development and also that of the sport,” Ninvalle said. London, the daughter of former world heavyweight champion, Pamela `The Grenade’ London, also represented Guyana at the South American Championships in Chile earlier this year.
Poole, a veteran coach, picked up his Three Star certificate one year ago when he successfully completed exams in Kazakhstan. He is now one of eight in the English-speaking Caribbean. The name of Poole and London were submitted to AIBA on Monday, one day before the deadline.
The World Championship would be held around the same time that AIBA is staging its Congress. The last Congress was held in 2010 in Almaty, Kazakhstan and GABA would be represented by its president at the upcoming event.
