FIFTY-THREE-year-old ELVIN Lorrimer of 184 Cato Street, Old Kara Kara, Linden succumbed during surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital after being shot by two armed men at the Linden bus park on Hadfield Street, Georgetown. The gunmen reportedly pulled up at the side of the bus Lorrimer drives and opened fire on him, hitting him in his chest and foot before escaping on a motor cycle.
Police confirmed that the incident occurred at 21:00hrs.

Lorrimer’s only daughter, Mary Lorrimer, said the family was informed of the tragedy by another driver, who told them that Lorrimer was shot and robbed of his money and cell phone while soliciting passengers to return to Linden.

Family members then rushed to the city, but were unable to see him, as he was in surgery.

When the Guyana Chronicle visited Lorrimer’s home, his wife was too distraught to speak, and family members were trying to stabilize her blood pressure.

His daughter said the family was not in receipt of much information regarding the incident, but knew that his bus was in the custody of the police.

The late Lorrimer had reportedly related to family members last week that he was approached by two men who had tried to rob him and had threatened to take his life.
He had said that the men were armed with knives and were identified by passengers as known robbers; one of whom resided on the West Bank of Demerara.

A pastor and former teacher, Lorrimer had plied the Linden-to-Georgetown route for the past 16 years. He was founder and secretary of the Linden/Georgetown Minibus Association, through whom he had fought for the rights of the drivers, and had taken their complaints to the relevant authorities…even to the President.
He had been an advocate against unruly behaviour on the bus park and unlawful soliciting of passengers. His daughter described him as a very loving father and a disciplinarian. He leaves to mourn his wife and four children.
