Letter to the Sports Editor – Appeal to new administration to resolve cricket crisis – It is time

I WISH to extend sincere congratulations to His Excellency President David Granger, Hon. Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, the newly-appointed Ministers of the Government and the entire membership of the APNU-AFC Coalition on your outstanding victory at the 2015 General and Regional Elections.
The people have clearly voted against one-party political domination and have placed their confidence in the Coalition in keeping with the universal trend.
I look forward to and am supportive of the new dispensation and in particular the expected restoration of honesty, integrity and accountability at all levels of national life. The spectre of corruption has for far too long tarnished and caused our economic and social developmental aspirations to retrogress.
It is against this backdrop that I wish to single out the administration of cricket as a major national tragedy as for five (5) years now there has been inordinate turmoil in our cricket.
I hold the view that the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has been hijacked by a small group of persons through a series of shenanigans including legal manoeuvres and cash-for-vote schemes for which monies intended for cricket development have been misappropriated. I remain adamant in my belief that there is no lawful executive body of the GCB.
I fervently appeal to the new administration to ensure that the lawlessness that presently obtains in our cricket is immediately consigned to oblivion and that legal elections, order, accountability and integrity are restored to our national game.
The time for change in our cricket is now.

MALCOLM PETERS
(Former President of the Berbice Cricket Board and Former Vice-President of the Guyana Cricket Board) for and on behalf of the Stakeholders of Guyana Cricket
