Leaders Slingerz held to 1-1 draw, Fruta Conquerors edge GDF 2-1

POINT leaders of the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) STAG Beer Elite League, Slingerz, were held to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening when 11th round action continued at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground, Camp Ayanganna.Meanwhile, in the opening fixture of the double-header card, North Ruimveldt-based team Fruta Conquerors edged host team GDF by one goal (1-0).
Andrew Murray opened the scoring with a 43rd minute goal for Alpha, but this was negated by Tichard Joseph (Slingerz) in the 57th minute.
Slingerz were reduced to 10 men with seven minutes remaining in their game against Alpha, after Clive Nobrega received a yellow card in the 41th minute and another in the 83rd minute resulting in a red card being shown to him.
Delon Lanferman, also of Slingerz, had received a yellow card as well, as early as the fifth minute.
In the opening game on Tuesday evening, Jahall Greaves and Rishanan Sandiford scored for Fruta Conquerors in the 72nd and 76th minutes respectively, while Kevin Cottoy scored GDF’s lone goal in the 61st minute.
The win for Fruta takes them to second in the point standings with 28 points, three adrift of Slingerz’ 31s.
To date Fruta Conquerors have won nine of their 11 matches. They lost one before Tuesday’s draw with the leaders. So far the North Ruimveldt-based team have scored 29 goals and conceded 13 for a plus 13 goal difference.
Slingerz have not lost any of their 11 games and have scored 27 goals while conceding six for a plus-21 goal difference.
GDF, on the other hand, have 14 points from their 11 matches. They won four, lost five and drew two. They have 17 goals for and 22 against for a minus-five goal difference and sit at fifth in the standings.
Alpha are currently third in the standings with 21 after 11 games. They won six, lost two and drew three. They have so far scored 27 goals and conceded 10 for a plus-17 goal difference.
The League will continue tomorrow with another double-header at the Camp Ayanganna ground.
In the opening game at 18:00hrs, Alpha United tackle the home side, while from 2030hrs, Slingerz and Fruta will battle for the points lead.
The winning team of the league will receive $4M, while the second-, third- and fourth-place teams will earn $2M, $1M and $500 000 respectively.
