ALPHA ‘The Hammer’ United defeated Fruta Conquerors 2-0 while Buxton United handed Monedderlust their third consecutive loss in the STAG Elite League, when action continued last evening at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground. An enthused crowed at the famous football venue witnessed Delon Lanferman clinically finish two goals in both sides of the half (44th and 68th minutes) to sink Fruta Conquerors, in a display of complete superiority by Alpha United.

It was Fruta Conquerors’ first loss in the STAG Elite League while Alpha United remained unbeaten of three clubs – Slingerz FC and Pele being the others – to hold such distinction so far in the competition.
With Alpha United’s Kithson Bain and captain Daniel Wilson leading the attack in the first half, Fruta Conquerors on several occasions, found themselves playing deep to keep the hungry forwards at bay.
Bain and Wilson’s combination at the top for head coach Wayne Dover proved to be a thorn in the feet of Fruta Conquerors defenders.
Wilson had come close to giving Alpha United the early lead, but his flat and hard right-footed shot was nicely taken by the ‘Fruta’ custodian.
Clearly, the support in the venue was for the Tucville team, and their fans ensured that the players knew how they felt when Lanferman scored a header from point-blank range after being left unmarked in the six-yard area when the ball was crossed.
Alpha United ended the half with a 1-0 and both sides had some heated exchanges in their respective dressing rooms as tempers flared among the players.
Upon the resumption of the match in the second half, again Alpha United had the upper hand, controlling the tempo of the game.
It did not look like the same Fruta Conquerors team that had played to an exciting 2-2 draw against the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
While Fruta Conquerors struggled to put together a good ‘knock’ to really trouble Alpha United defenders, Lanferman was busy carving his way around his opposition’s defence but resolute goalkeeping kept the SM Jaleel-sponsored team from going down any further.
Captain Trevon Lythcott was kept on his toes; literally, as he steered his fellow Fruta Conquerors defenders but Lanferman could not have been contained for 45 more minutes.
The former Den Amstel United player scored a beauty for his second goal of the night, when he intercepted a pass and manoeuvred smoothly between two defenders and then nicely tucked the ball around the advancing goalkeeper.
The win puts Alpha United atop the eight-team table on superior goal difference (+4) despite being tied with Pele FC on eight points.
Fruta Conquerors slipped to third in the standings with seven points but ahead of Slingerz FC (six points) to round off the top four teams after the completion of four rounds.
Meanwhile, in the opening contest there was nothing to ‘wow’ about, since both teams (Buxton United and Monedderlust) failed to make any impression on the fans.
However, Buxton United held the advantage over the Berbicians throughout the 90-minute contest.
Coming up short in their three previous matches, Eson Hamer scored in the 82nd minute to secure a well deserved win for the East Coast Demerara club – their first in the STAG Elite League.
The loss was Monedderlust’s third consecutive, following defeats to Slingerz FC (3-0) and Fruta Conquerors (2-1).
