… extends deadline to Friday
DIRECTOR of Sport within the National Sports Commission (NSC) Neil Kumar yesterday told Chronicle Sport he is not pleased with the slow response shown by the various Sports Associations, as it relates to the Nominations of Athletes for National honours.According to Kumar, only a few associations managed to reach last Friday’s deadline as set out by the NSC and he is appealing to the associations who have not made their submissions to date, to take advantage of the new deadline which is this Friday and submit the names for the respective categories.
“It is the mandate of the NSC to host on a yearly basis, an awards ceremony wherein we honour the top sportsmen and women, administrators and even media personnel for the work they would have done in the previous year.
“However, even though some associations are aware of the deadline – since we indicated this to them before – they have been slow in responding to which I am disappointed as we don’t wish to go to the voting process without all the associations submitting their nominations,” said Kumar.
Dependable Guyana and West Indies middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, along with local and Caribbean squash queen Nicolette Fernandes, waltzed away with the 2012 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards last year, when the presentation was held at the National Convention Centre.
