Kristian Jeffrey snaps up NSC Sportsman-of-the-Year … Alisha Fortune takes ladies title

DOUBLE Caribbean motor racing champion Kristian Jeffrey is the 2015 Sportsman-oft-the-Year after beating out stiff competition at the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) Sports Award ceremony, which was held at the National Cultural Centre on Wednesday evening.“Tonight is something I’ve been dreaming about for a while,” an elated Jeffrey commented just after his win after beating out names like cricketer Veerasammy Permaul, three-time Mr Guyana winner Kerwin Clarke, Olympian Winston George and bodybuilder Devon Davis

“Ever since I was a child sports has been a big thing for me, I played a lot of different sports and I’ve always wanted to be Sportsman-of-the-Year. Fortunately I got everything done last year to get the award, and I hope to continue to develop as a racer and to get motor racing more recognised.”
Meanwhile the multi-talented sprinter and bodybuilder Alisha Fortune copped the 2015 Sportswoman-of-the-Year at the annual ceremony.
For her part an delighted Fortune used the opportunity to thank all those who have supported her throughout her eminent sports career, including her family, her community, her sponsors and God.
Table tennis starlet Chelsea Edghill outdid a pool of five other contenders to land the 2015 Junior Sportswoman-of-the-Year award.
World-ranked badminton player and Caribbean bronze medallist Narayan Ramdhani’s many wonderful performances from last year earned him the 2015 Junior Sportsman-of-the-Year title.
In the Male and Female Athlete with Disability segments the winners were Calvin Thomas and Deandre David, respectively.
The Guyana Sport Shooting Federation (GSSF) walked away with the award for the Most Improved Association of 2015. The Sports Team-of-the-Year for 2015 was conferred upon the Guyana Squash team.
Recognising not only the players, but also the people who work behind the scenes to make the players who they are, the NSC delivered the Coach-of-the-Year Award to national table tennis coach Linden Johnson, who has now won the award for a second straight year..
Also from the table tennis association president Godfrey Munroe is the 2015 Male Sports Personality-of-the-Year. The female version of this award was won by owner and managing director of Woodpecker Products, Luana Fernandes.
Tennis’ Shelly Daly Ramdyhan won Female Sports Official-of-the-Year, while secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board, Anand Sanasie, won Male Sports Official of-the-Year.
For the journalists who work assiduously, Kaieteur News’ Franklin Wilson won Journalist-of-the-Year (Print Media) and TVG’s Avenash Ramzan the Sports Journalist-of-the-Year (Non-Print).
