Jailed for assaulting mother

TWENTY-YEAR-OLD Kevin Christopher Balkaran was Tuesday found guilty and sentenced to 4 months’ imprisonment for assaulting his mother.Balkaran of Houston Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara is a frequent visitor to the courts for threatening to kill his mother Usha Balkaran.

City Magistrate Annette Singh convicted him for using abusive language towards his mother at Back Street, Houston Housing Scheme, Georgetown on April 12 last.

The court was told that the defendant uses drugs and would abuse his mother whenever she refuses to give him money. However on the day in question, the defendant had gone to his mother’s home and had asked for food. When she refused his request, he assailed her with a series of offensive words.

Last year Balkaran was convicted on two separate charges for threatening his mother. He served 4 months on each occasion.

The magistrate Tuesday sentenced Balkaran to four month’s imprisonment and warned him that if he appeared before her once more he would be given the maximum penalty.

Meanwhile, before Magistrate Faith McGusty, a man was sentenced to one week imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to assaulting his reputed wife.

Dewayne Antony Magamootoo, on April 26, at Station Street Kitty, threatened to kill his wife, Lanett Singh.

The court heard the Magamootoo was under the influence of alcohol when he went home armed with a cutlass. Magamootoo chopped the walls and telephone wire on the house and told the woman that he would killed her.

The tearful man was remanded since last week for the offence after he had denied the charge, but he changed his plea to save the court’s time.

He was fined $10,000 for the offence, but was sentenced since he did not have the money to pay.
