WELL-known local poet and writer, Ras Michael Jeune, died yesterday. He was in his 70s. Described by long-time friend, Barrington Braithwaite, as “an exceptional Dub Poet”, Ras Michael was known for his contributions to the performing arts both here and in the US, where he lived for close to 10 years before remigrating to his beloved Guyana some two to three years ago.
Though he began writing in earnest at the age of 13 for the Guyana Teenage Chronicle, he was first published at age 12 by The Guyana Information Services.

According to Moray House Trust, with which he’s worked closely since coming back, Ras Michael had a career in theatre as an actor, playwright and director.

He’s represented Guyana in Colombia, French Guiana and North America in literary expositions and theatre.
Many of his works have been published by Longman and Heinemann of London, but he was also self-published on occasion.
He was also a columnist for many years for both the Guyana Chronicle and the Stabroek News.
