Hetmyer determined to make WICB President’s XI selection count

OPENING batsman Shimron Hetmyer is already considered one of Guyana’s and the Region’s brightest prospects and his exploits while captaining the West Indies Under-19 team that won the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh in February, put his promising career further on track.Now he has another challenge facing him. The 19-year-old has been named in the 13-man WICB President’s XI squad, announced by the WICB Selection panel last week.
The team will face South Africa in a day/night 50-over match at Queen’s Park Oval today at 13:00 hrs.
Speaking with Chronicle Sport recently, Hetmyer is determined to make the opportunity count.
“I am determined to make it count. If I make the final X1, I want to grab this opportunity with both hands; I am eager to prove myself against high quality players,” said Hetymer.
The youngster admitted that the opportunity will definitely be a learning experience, adding that he will use it to further strengthen his game.

The WICB President’s XI will be led by Test opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite. The squad also includes left-hander Evin Lewis, who was a member of the West Indies team, which won the ICC World T20 in India last month.
Several other players with international experience have also been selected, including batsmen Jermaine Blackwood, and Jason Mohammed; wicket-keeper Shane Dowrich; left-arm spinner Nikita Miller; and allrounder Rayad Emrit.
The Proteas are using the match as part of their preparations for the upcoming Tri Nation ODI Series, which also features West Indies and Australia.
