THE Guyana Lottery Company yesterday handed over a cheque of an undisclosed sum to the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) to aid in their quest to send a team of five boxers and two officials to the Pan Am Qualifiers, scheduled for Tijuana, Mexico from June 4. The GBA has selected United States-based super heavyweight Quincy `Biggy’ Small, middleweight Dennis Thomas, junior welterweight Jason Phillips, lightweight Diwani Lampkin and bantamweight Delon Charles to participate at the tournament.
According to the GBA, manager/coach Sebert Blake and Francisco Roldan will be accompanying the boxers. Those boxers who win gold, silver or bronze medals in Mexico are automatically qualified for the Pan Am Games due to be held in Canada in July.
At a simple but significant handing-over ceremony yesterday at the GLC’s Lamaha Street head office, Managing Director Tracy Lewis said that it was a pleasure to assist the female team in their quest not only to go to the top of NACRA, but also to become the first team sport in Guyana to qualify for the Olympics.
Keisha Chase, GBA Assistant-Secretary/Treasurer thanked the GLC for its timely intervention and said that the only way the Association can repay them is by the boxers performing well.
