ATTORNEY GENERAL Basil Williams and Legal Advisor of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Alicia Williams were part of a teleconference with representatives of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and Representatives of the Americas Regional Review Group (ARRG).The teleconference was scheduled for August 27 in Quito, Ecuador but because of the 2015 Budget debate in the National Assembly, the AG requested that Guyana participate via teleconferencing, a press release said.
This teleconference came on the heels of the just- concluded CFATF Ministerial meeting in Miami, Florida.
An agreed action plan between FATF and Guyana was addressed at the teleconference, and this country was congratulated on its effort and commitment, in addressing the majority of the deficiencies identified, after the review by the ARRG.
The Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (Amendment) Act 2015, which was passed in Parliament and assented into law was sent to ARRG, along with the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AMLCFT) Regulation 2015.
FULLY COMPLIANT
These pieces of legislation have ensured that Guyana is now fully compliant with the FATF’s requirements, the release noted.
The teleconference with FATF and ARRG Co-Chairpersons on August 27 saw participants form Mexico, Spain, Canada, the US Treasury Department and Canada, the release added.
