TORONTO, Canada – The Scarborough Dominoes Club (SDC), comprising mainly of Guyanese nationals here, is gearing for the next staging of the North American Dominoes Federation (NADF) tournament, set for West Palm Beach Florida during the upcoming Easter weekend. The club is also celebrating its 21st anniversary this year.The NADF comprises teams from Canada and the United States of America and these include SDC and Montreal from here, Guyesco (New York), Maryland, Orlando, and Palm Beach. Two other teams, Atlanta and Washington, which previously participated, are no longer involved.
The tournaments are normally played three times per year with one of the teams playing hosts and is responsible for providing the winning and other incentive trophies and refreshments.
The last tournament, held in Montreal last October, saw the SDC emerging as the champions in the five-team race with skipper Godfrey Austin copping the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. West Palm Beach occupied the second spot while Montreal placed third.
SDC was formed in 1995 by long-standing president Austin and his deputy Dereck Hing, also a Guyanese. For several years, the club operated out of 101 Ironside Scarborough from a leased building but have since moved to Bing’s Tower, Danforth Avenue, also in Scarborough.
Apart from Austin and Hing, the other executive members are secretary Jennifer Lindo and treasurer Nazim Bacchus while the other players are Charles “Charlo” Telesford, Basil Jeet, Nigel Guinness, Edgar Douglas and Lloyd Hing.
Meanwhile, the SDC which is a non-profit organisation, will be holding a fund-raising bus ride on Saturday, March 5 next to Falls View Casino.
