Guinness Greatest of De Streets quarter-finals action in Linden tonight

IT STARTED with 32 teams but now, the Guinness Greatest of De Streets football tournament are down to only eight and tonight at the Mackenzie Market Square, four teams will be sent home while the other four will advance to cash in on the $300 000 first place prize. Classic Six needled (1-0) Pokerburg when Romel Matthews found the net in the 11th minute and in game two, Amelia’s Ward Panthers, thanks to a brace from Andel Norvell (3rd and 4th), saw them defeat Aliku 2-0.
Both Speightland and Retrieve Unknown were 1-0 winners on the night, defeating The Amazings and Silent Assassins respectively.
Wisroc came away 2-1 winners over Half Mile/One Mile on penalty after regulation and extra time ended goalless between the two Wismar-based teams.
The Russians, one of the tournament favourites, solidified their seriousness to not only win the competition, but also to represent Linden at the National playoffs, after hammering Coomacka 3-0.
Captain Travis ‘Chicken’ Whatterton netted in the 7th minute while Oswald Benjamin (9th) and Terrence Aaron (4th) accounted for the other two goals for the Amelia’s Ward unit.
Hard Knocks, behind Rene Allicock’s 7th minute goal, edged Attackers 1-0 and Silver Bullets would want to blame Tony Gilbert for their demise, having fallen 1-0 to Star Boys. Gilbert scored an own-goal in the 19th minute.
Meanwhile, Wisroc and Classic Six will collide in tonight’s opening game of the quarter-finals and Unknowns and Amelia’s Ward Panthers will clash in the game two.
The Russians go head-to-head against Speightland, followed by the Hard Knocks and Star Boys encounter.
