GT Beer/Berbice Cup 2014 Past Berbice footballers honoured

CO-HOSTS, Monedderlust Football Club and Starlight Generation, will pay respect to and honour some past outstanding footballers from the Ancient County of Berbice as their names are added to all the individual trophies in the current Berbice Cup Knock Out Tournament.

The eight-team tournament which is being sponsored in part by Banks DIH Limited through their GT Beer this year, commenced on October 4 and is set for an exciting climax tomorrow at the Monedderlust field in Number Five Village, West Coast Berbice.
According to the Tournament’s Chief Organiser, Kevin Layne Jr, “All the individual trophies will be named after past outstanding players from Berbice and all have been secured. I must say special thanks to Oliver Hinckson and Trophy Stall for willingly supporting this year’s Tournament by donating trophies,” Layne said.
The James Paul trophy will go to the ‘MVP’ and the Best Defender will receive the Gordon Alphonso trophy, both of which were donated by Oliver Hinckson while Trophy Stall contributed the Kenneth ‘Skip’ Price trophy for the ‘Best Goalkeeper’ and Starlight Generation the Roger Alphonso ‘Top Goalscorer’ trophy.
Paul who represented Guyana at the Junior and senior levels in the early eighties was a utility player who hailed from the now defunct Arsenal Football Club of New Amsterdam.
Price, who wore the senior national colours in the early eighties as well and was also from Arsenal, distinguished himself in the City with Santos Football Club alongside Paul, even as Roger Alphonso also represented Guyana at the Junior and senior levels and his elder brother Gordon played for the Junior national team.
Both Gordon and Roger Alphonso migrated to the USA, with Gordon going onto attend the Clemson University and Roger the University of San Francisco where he became the first and only Guyanese to win the NCAA Football Championship in 1978.
