GSA’s Bounty Farm Handicap squash tourney … Raphael DeGroot, Ashley Khalil star on third night

RAPHAEL DeGroot and Ashley Khalil were the stars on Thursday night when the Guyana Squash Association’s (GSA) Bounty Farm Ltd/Digicel-sponsored squash tournament continued at the Georgetown Club courts with play in both Category A and Open and spectators were entertained by several close and high quality matches.In what turned out to be the feature match of the night Javid Rahaman (+3 handicap) was up against Raphael De Groot (-13).

Rahaman won the first game relatively easily as he reached ten points before DeGroot had scored and eventually won the game 15-7.
In the second game Rahaman again reached to ten points with DeGroot on zero and at 14-6 match ball, it seemed as it was all over for DeGroot, but this was not to be as he clawed his way back one point at a time before eventually winning the second game 18-16.
In the third game Rahaman reached nine points before DeGroot opened his account but could get no further than thirteen as the former completed a remarkable comeback victory by winning the third game 15-13.
In the match-up between two female national players, Ashley Khalil (-3) and Ashley De Groot (+1), Ashley Khalil won the first game comfortably 15-8 but the second game was a different affair as firstly, Ashley Khalil had match point at 14-12 but then Ashley De Groot won the next three points to have game ball at 15-14 and then another game point at 17-16 before Ashley Khalil finally won the game 21-19 and the match.
In Category ‘A’, the James Mekdeci (+7) against Kamir Khan also +7 was the highlight of the evening. James won an extremely close first game 19-17, but Kamir bounced back to win the second game easily 15-11.
The third game went back and forth and with Kamir leading 12-8, it seemed as if he would go on to take the match but James won the next six points to have match point at 14-12 and eventually won 16-14.

John Maikoo (+7) beat Jan Verwey (+9) 15-11, 17-15; Nicholas Narain (-15) defeated Ryan Rahaman (+5) 15-8, 15-11; Ben Mekdeci (-11) defeated Daniel Islam (+7) 19-17, 15-13; Jason Ray Khalil (-24) defeated Wayne Alphonso (+11) 15-12, 15-11
In Category `A’, Michael Alphonso (-1) defeated Halley Carpenter (+9) 15-12, 15-11; James Mekdeci (+7) beat Kamir Khan (+7) 19-17, 11-15, 16-14; Kirsten Gomes (+4) beat Teija Edwards (+10) 15-8, 15-8
Lucas Jonas (-3) defeated Chad De Abreu (+11) 16-14, 9-15, 16-14; Demetrius De Abreu (-1) defeated Georgiana Fernandes (+10) 15-11, 16-14; Madison Fernandes (+3) defeated Mohryan Baksh (+10) 15-11, 15-8 and Ethan Jonas (-1) beat Jason Gomes (+4) 15-8, 15-7.
In the Open Plate category, Alex Cheeks (+7) beat J Fernandes (+9) 15-9, 15-13; Timothy Jonas (+10) beat Robin Low (+10) 15-12, 15-6; Medhi Ramdhani (+5) beat Makeda Harding (+10) 15-9, 15-9; Andrea King (+8) beat Jonathan Edwards (+12) 15-9, 15-5; Taylor Fernandes (+6) defeated Haopei Yang (+10) 15-12, 16-14; Dwayne Yan (+9) beat Kyle Waldron (+10) 15-9, 15-10; Joe Mekdeci (0) beat Anthony Islam (+9) 4-15, 15-13, 16-14; Anil Singh (+10) beat Jamaal Douglas (+8) 15-6, 15-10; Stephen Fernandes got a walkover from David Fernandes; Sarah Lewis secured a walkover from D.
