The recently formed Pocket Rocket Gym in Linden was the recipient of a quantity of boxing gear, compliments of overseas based Guyanese Ronald Grogan and Linden ‘Sancho’ Alphonso.Gloves, head-gear, pads, mouth guards, hand wraps, skipping ropes were presented to Coach Orlan Rogers for the gym which is located in Victory Valley, Wismar.

“As former Victory Valley residents, it’s a way of giving back to the community having experienced what it is not to have, before Royals Valley was all about boxing producing some of the best boxers in Guyana,” said Grogan in an invited comment.

The cheerful giver listed Conrad Wilson, Colin Douglas, Jestus Craig, Rogers himself “and the one person that every Victory Valley kid wanted to emulate – Terrence Ali. Once it was known that a gym was formed (read in the newspaper) providing assistance was almost automatic.”

Grogan and his cousin Alphonso are hoping to “exploit the talents of the many youngsters and produce Guyana’s next world champion or first gold medallist. If we came that close with Terrence Ali then there is reason to believe that a champion is hidden away somewhere; we just have to find it.”

Continued support was promised to Rogers through overseas donors.
