GPL employee charged with slapping student

A CONFIDENTIAL Secretary of the Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) was on Friday placed on $10,000 bail after she appeared before City Magistrate Faith McGutsy charged with assaulting a Grade Three student of St. Margaret’s Primary School, Georgetown.Forty–two-year-old Sherry Mingo of Lot 90 Sideline Dam, Buxton, East Coast Demerara denied the allegation, which stated that on September 21, 2016, she unlawfully assaulted the child so as to cause him actual bodily harm.

According to a police report, on the day in question, the 8-year-old saw Mingo’s son hitting another student, and Mingo’s son fell while running away, after hitting the child. The 8-year-old laughed at Mingo’s son, and then a fight broke out between the two. While the boys were fighting, Mingo walked into the school’s compound and so slapped the 8-year-old on his left side cheek as to leave her hand print on the child’s face. The police were summoned to the school and Mingo was arrested.

She admitted to the allegation when it was put to her. The matter has been adjourned to October 14.
