GUYANA Senior Men’s National Football team – The Golden Jaguars – will wing out for neighbouring Suriname tonight, ahead of their Friendly International against their Dutch-speaking rivals on Thursday at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium in Paramaribo. Unlike previous years, the team will not be taking the gruelling overland journey; instead the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Normalisation Committee chose to have them leave from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
The squad was announced last evening and up to press time, Chronicle Sport was unsuccessful in getting the names for the important encounter, only being told that a Press Conference is arranged for today where the names of the team and other details pertaining to the tour will be made public.
However, in a recent interview, Shabazz had pointed out that “Suriname is a formidable opponent and we have had joyous moments and heart-breaking moments against them”.
The clash between the countries Shabazz says “means more than football to Guyana; it’s a huge rivalry that goes way back to both of our colonial pasts.”
This will be the team’s fourth game of the year, having drawn 2-2 against Barbados in Bridgetown, while picking up 2-0 victories over St Lucia and Grenada at Providence.
“Against Grenada, we used only five players who started against St Lucia and now we have a great opportunity to widen the pool. When one considers that in the three friendly matches we have played so far this year, seven Under-23s have featured prominently, which shows that we are starting to see depth in the squad.
“Additionally, games outside of the FIFA match window allow us a great opportunity to keep bodies on the pitch and our eyes on the prize.” Shabazz said.
