THE Guyana Olympic Association in collaboration with the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) will today observe Olympic Day 2016 with a five-race cycle programme that will be staged around the inner circuit of the National Park commencing at 08:00hrs.According to coordinator of the activity, Hassan Mohamed, the five events carded for the day will include races for BMX riders as well as juniors and juveniles and mountain bikers.
BMX boys 9-12 years old and 12-14 years old will compete in three-lap races while those in the 6-9 age group will do battle over two laps.
The mountain bikers as well as the juniors and juveniles will contest 10-lap races.
The activity is being staged under the International Olympic Committee’s three Pillars – Move, Learn and Discover policy.
However, the highlight of the GOA’s observance of Olympic Day 2016 will be the Run/Walk/Jog which will also be held this morning starting at 06:00 hrs from outside the Thomas Lands YMCA.
Participants who complete the 10K `Fun Run’ event will receive an Olympic Day T-Shirt along with a certificate signed by the IOC president.
The `Fun Run’ caters for persons 10 years and older and will commence on Thomas Lands, proceed North on Camp Street, East along Carifesta Avenue and the Rupert Craig Highway, to turn in the Access Road, Lillendaal.
The course then continues West via Kitty Public Road, South into Vlissengen Road, then West into Thomas Road to finish at the point of origin.
There will also be a 10K team run which starts at 06:30hrs outside the YMCA and will follow the same course as the `Fun Run’.
A team must consist of four males and two females, all of whom must complete the course in order to gain points.
Monetary prizes and trophies will be awarded for the Team Run.
The team finishing first will receive $72,000, while the second and third place teams will earn $48,000 and $32,000 respectively.
