THE climax of the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) STAG Elite Tournament to determine the National Club Champions is set for the Guyana Defence Force ground, Camp Ayanganna tomorrow. The GFF held a Press briefing yesterday at the Federation’s Boardroom where it was stated that the one-off game will have no prize money. Speaking on behalf of the Federation, executive committee member Dion Inniss expressed heartfelt thanks to all the sponsors, teams, Competition’s Committee and the Media for being on board.
Inniss, however, shared the sentiments of Alpha United head coach who is calling for a review of the format of the League so as to realistically have a true League competition where there is no final to decide the Champion. The team with the most points, accumulated from a similar number of games played by all teams should be crowned Champion.
Coach Wayne Dover told the media that if he was the coach of Slingerz or if Alpha had been in Slingerz position it would have been “painful after dominating by playing unbeaten in the two-round League matches and not being crowned the Champions and then lose the finale”.
Coach Dover also expressed confidence in his side winning a 6th national title, ”We will make this grand finale a remarkable final.
“For us, making it six in a row, in terms of National championships, is our aim and objective going into this game. We have taken the Elite step by step. We have placed the emphasis on 3 games and now we have the last one, so we will diligently continue in our preparations to achieve our aims and objectives”.
Speaking on behalf of Slingerz, captain Tichard Joseph said, ”After the defeat last Sunday, and it was a very tough loss to swallow; we have remained focused as we pick ourselves up again. We still have another chance to win the Championship. We will continue to work hard and come out on Sunday and hopefully come out on top”.
Also speaking to the Media was Darshanie Yussuf of Ansa McAl who said that as a sponsor this was not the first preference, to have a Champion of Champions final to win the league, but wished both teams well.
She also said that while the first half of the competition was fantastic there were blunders in the second half. She, however, did not elaborate on the blunders but added that hopefully they would be corrected.
Tomorrow’s game is set for 21:00hrs and will be preceded by a game between Georgetown’s Western Tigers FC and Den Amstel FC from the West Demerara, starting at 18:30hrs.
