GFA/Banks Beer Knockout Cup presentation set for next week : … Slingerz FC to receive top prize, Highest Goalscorer to be decided

SLINGERZ FC will receive their $4M cheque for winning the Georgetown Football Association’s (GFA)/Banks Beer Knockout Cup tournament in the upcoming week when the presentation ceremony is held at a venue and date to be announced over the weekend.The West Demerara-based team defeated Santos of Georgetown 3-2 in the final that was played on Wednesday night at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence

Apart from winning the top prize, their custodian Ronson Williams is in line for copping the Best Goalkeeper award after a mere three goals were scored against him in five matches.
The Highest Goalscorer award is yet unknown but according to statistics accumulated by this news paper, Santos’ Michael Pedro and Wensley Christoff as well as Sunburst Camptown’s Devon Forde all have five goals to their names.
Pedro registered a helmet-trick (four goals) versus Houston Stars in the team’s 10-1 win, then slotted home one goal against Winners Connection in a second round match.
Surinamese Christoff scored one goal in the team’s 2-0 win against Sunburst Camptown in a quarter-final fixture, one goal against Guyana Defence Force in a semi-final match and a double versus Slingerz in the final last Wednesday.
Forde scored four goals in his team’s 10-0 win against Essequibo on the opening day of the tournament, then slotted home one goal against Winners Connection in a second round fixture.
Unfortunately, Sunburst Camptown was ousted from the tournament by Santos who beat them 1-0 in a quarter-final fixture.
Overall a total of 126 goals were scored in the 32 matches played. Of the 126 goals, Slingerz scored 14 of them and conceded three, Santos scored 18 and conceded six from five matches, while GDF scored 19 goals and conceded eight from five matches.
Meanwhile, Santos will receive $2.5M for placing second, while BK Western Tigers and GDF will receive $1.5M and $1M respectively for finishing third and fourth.
