THE Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) is soon to benefit from two ‘groundwater data loggers’ which it received on Tuesday from the Government of Germany through the German Agency for International Co-operation (GIZ) Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Technical Assistance (REETA) Project.According to Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, the equipment which is used for the measurement and recording of ground/surface water levels and temperature will be used at different potential hydropower sites in Guyana.

REETA also facilitated hydropower engineer Tobias Dertman from Germany to support Guyana in its various hydropower initiatives.

This, according to the Public Infrastructure Ministry, is in keeping with one of its goals to provide technical training to regional establishments with the aim of aiding the
development of their institutional structures and networking with other institutions.

Stationed at GEA’s head office, Dertman will be in Guyana for two years, during which he will lend his expertise to hydropower development in Guyana, and aid GEA’s engineers with the aim of building local capacity in relation to hydropower development.

The REETA Project, headed by Dr. Andreas Taeuber, is based at the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat and is aimed at supporting the institutional structure for the promotion of renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) in the Caribbean, as well as strengthening the ability of the Energy Unit of the CARICOM Secretariat to carry out its coordinating role.
